Dangerous Tax on Workers’ Healthcare Defeated – For Now – Due to IAFF’s Aggressive Lobbying Efforts

The IAFF scored a major victory this week when a dangerous tax on workers’ healthcare benefits was stripped from a House proposal to restructure the Affordable Care Act. Current law exempts premiums paid on employer-provided healthcare from federal taxation, but the House Republican plan released last month capped the tax at 90% of the value of the average health plan. If enacted, this policy would result in thousands of dollars of new taxes for fire fighters and other workers with employer-provided healthcare. For the past several weeks, the IAFF and its members have been lobbying members of Congress in DC, educating them on what capping the exclusion could mean for fire fighters. The message was clear and direct – capping the exclusion would unfairly hurt IAFF members by cutting benefits and increasing taxes. These efforts were reinforced at the IAFF Legislative Conference where over 700 union leaders from across the country gathered in Washington, DC, to help fight against this dangerous idea at the exact time it was being considered in the House Ways and Means Committee.
